Troops in Afghanistan Kill Armed Militants, Seize Suspect

Aug. 18, 2008 - Coalition and Afghan forces killed an unknown number of armed militants and seized a suspect in Afghanistan yesterday,
military officials said. Enemy fighters attacked a coalition base in the Bermel Valley of Paktika province with small-arms, machine-gun and rocket fire. Combined forces retaliated with machine-gun and mortar fire, killing several militants, military officials said.

No Afghan, coalition forces or civilian casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, as troops searched for a Taliban
leader in a compound in the Tag Ab district of Kapisa province, they came under fire from multiple enemy fighters.

Coalition forces responded with air strikes and small-arms fire, killing the insurgents,
military officials said.

Troops discovered and destroyed assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and ammunition.

In Khowst province yesterday, coalition forces detained a militant responsible for assisting foreign fighters entering Afghanistan,
military officials said.
