Forces Detain Haqqani Facilitator in Khost Province

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2011 – Afghan and coalition forces detained a Haqqani terrorist network facilitator and another suspected insurgent in the Sabari district of Afghanistan’s Khost province yesterday, military officials reported.

The facilitator conducted bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the area, officials said.

In other operations yesterday:

-- An Afghan and International Security Assistance Force patrol found 16 bags of marijuana, ranging in weight from 100 to 120 pounds, in Helmand province’s Garm Ser district.

-- In Parwan province’s Salang district, an ISAF patrol found three 115 mm ordnances, five 82 mm mortars and a rocket-propelled grenade.

-- ISAF patrols spotted several insurgents planting roadside bombs in Helmand’s Nahr-e Sarej and Sangin districts. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position, killing several insurgents and wounding another.

-- In Kandahar province’s Spin Boldak district, a bomb detonated as two insurgents were planting it, killing one and wounding the other.

-- An ISAF patrol in Helmand’s Reg-e Khan Meshin district found an assault rifle, 14 assault rifle magazines and 250 7.62 mm rounds.

-- An Afghan and ISAF patrol in Kandahar’s Arghandab district found a 450 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, an anti-personnel mine, nine jugs of homemade explosives, detonation cord and about 40 pounds of ball bearings.

-- In Kunar province’s Watahpur district, an Afghan and ISAF patrol received small-arms. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position, killing an insurgent.
