WASHINGTON, April 6, 2011 – An International Security Assistance Force three-vehicle convoy was involved in an accident in Kabul today that killed an Afghan civilian and wounded two others, according to initial reporting.
According to reports, one of the ISAF vehicles accidentally struck some civilians who were in the road. No shots were fired by ISAF service members. A nearby ISAF patrol provided a security cordon while first aid was administered.
The wounded were taken by civilian vehicle to a medical facility.
In operations yesterday:
-- ISAF troops repelled an insurgent attack on a coalition forward operating base in the Beshud district of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan. Numerous insurgents were killed and one was wounded. Coalition forces retrieved multiple automatic weapons, 400 7.62 mm rounds, a mortar tube, two RPG launchers and 19 RPG rounds. There were no ISAF casualties.
-- A combined Afghan and coalition force detained several suspected Haqqani Network insurgents while targeting a Haqqani facilitator during a security operation in the Sabari district of Khost province. The man is responsible for the facilitation of weapons, ammunition and improvised explosive device materials. He works directly under a senior Haqqani leader who has connections with other senior leaders based in Pakistan.
-- In Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator during a security operation in the Kajaki district. The man was the key liaison between the narcotics trade and Taliban weapons procurement in northern Helmand and the Maiwand district. He oversaw drug orders and money exchanges for insurgents in the Kajaki area.
-- A combined Afghan and coalition force detained several suspected insurgents during a raid to capture a Taliban leader in the Shah Joy district of Zabul province. The leader is a Taliban IED facilitator responsible for the movement, distribution and emplacement of explosive devices along Highway 1 in the district.
-- In Nimroz province, an ISAF security patrol discovered several IEDs and associated components and a chemicals cache in the Khash Rod district. The cache consisted of five IEDs, 60 electrical detonators, 2,870 pounds of ammonium chloride, 1,543 pounds of aluminum nitrate, 110 pounds of carbon and different type of narcotics.
-- In the Tarin Kot district of Uruzgan province, a combined Afghan-ISAF patrol found a weapons cache consisting of an AK-47 rifle, two full AK-47 magazines, 300 7.62 mm rounds, a hand grenade, and six RPG rounds.
-- During separate clearing operations in Helmand, ISAF patrols were engaged by numerous insurgents in the Nahr-e Saraj and Sangin districts. Coalition forces returned fire and called for artillery and air support. The artillery and air weapons teams engaged the enemy positions, killing numerous insurgents and forcing the others to flee.
-- An ISAF patrol operating in Helmand’s Marjah district found a weapons cache consisting of one 82 mm mortar round, two anti-personnel mines, several ball bearings and several rocket fuses.
-- In the Sar Kani district of Kunar province, an ISAF patrol found a weapons cache consisting of 18 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, homemade explosives, and several IED-making components.
In April 4 operations:
-- A combined Afghan-ISAF patrol killed two insurgents and confiscated a narcotics cache during an operation in the Maiwand district of Kandahar province. The operation targeted an insurgent courier who stores and transports weapons and explosives throughout the district. The security patrol killed two insurgents that tried to engage the combined forces. After clearing the area, the forces confiscated 2,340 pounds of opium.
-- An Afghan and coalition force discovered a vehicle-borne IED emplaced in a motorcycle during the capture of a Taliban leader in Kandahar City, Kandahar province. The leader was in charge of a team that conducted IED and small-arms attacks in the areas south and southeast of Kandahar City. Two other suspected Taliban insurgents were detained.
In April 3 operations:
-- Afghan and coalition forces detained a high-level insurgent leader and another suspected insurgent during a security operation in Paktiya province’s Dand Patan district. The insurgent leader is known for emplacing roadside bombs and coordinating attacks against Afghan and ISAF forces operating in the district.
