National Institute for Justice Summarizes Domesitc Radicalization and Terrorism Research

Article Describes Key Findings From Several NIJ Studies

WASHINGTON – The Office of Justice Programs’ National Institute of Justice today published an article detailing the objectives of NIJ’s Domestic Radicalization and Terrorism research portfolio and NIJ’s leading role in terrorism research at the national and international levels. The article summarizes the findings of several NIJ-sponsored studies, including research on risk factors for radicalization.

In 2017, 10,900 terrorist attacks claimed the lives of more than 26,400 people around the world; 65 of those attacks occurred in the United States, almost double the number committed in 2002. Countering violent extremism depends on understanding the radicalization process that leads to terrorist acts, but radicalization within the United States is a complicated picture. The urgency, lethality and multifaceted complexity of the problem of domestic radicalization to terrorism make it a top research priority for NIJ.
