June 11, 2007 – Three U.S. soldiers were killed and six were wounded when a suicide car bomb struck the checkpoint they were manning south of Baghdad yesterday.
An Iraqi interpreter also was wounded in the attack, which destroyed part of a highway overpass near Mahmoudiya. The wounded were evacuated to coalition medical facilities for treatment. The names of the dead and wounded are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
Meanwhile, the Defense Department announced today the death of an airman who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Airman 1st Class Eric M. Barnes, 20, of Lorain, Ohio, died June 9 as a result of an improvised-explosive-device attack on an Air Force convoy about 100 miles south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 90th Logistics Readiness Squadron, F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo.
