Iraqi, Coalition Forces Arrest Terror Suspects

June 24, 2009 - Iraqi forces and coalition advisors arrested suspected terrorists, including a senior leader, in operations in Iraq in the past five days, military officials reported. Yesterday, Iraqi police from the Basra special weapons and tactics team, aided by coalition advisors, arrested a suspected terrorist during an Iraqi-led operation in southern Iraq. The man is suspected in the development and use of roadside bombs and indirect-fire attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces in Maysan province.

Southwest of Baghdad, the Emergency Response Brigade, an elite police force, and coalition advisors arrested three suspected terrorists June 22 in Amariyah. The forces arrested the suspected terrorists, including an alleged senior-level leader, for their involvement in the facilitation and approval of multiple suicide bombings.

In Mahmudiyah, south of Baghdad, an element of Iraqi special operations forces, aided by coalition forces, arrested a suspected insurgent June 20. The suspect is believed to be responsible for supervising insurgent operations in the Baghdad area.

In separate operations in Ninevah province:

-- Iraqi forces and coalition advisors arrested two suspected terrorists June 21. The men are suspected of funding anti-Iraqi operations, smuggling, sniper attacks and indirect-fire attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces in Mosul.

-- Iraqi forces, aided by coalition advisors, arrested two suspected terrorists June 20. The suspected terrorists are believed to have led terrorist cells that facilitate attacks against Iraqi security forces in Mosul.

The Mosul SWAT team, along with coalition advisors, arrested a suspected financier and weapons smuggler June 19. According to military reports, his arrest is expected to disrupt terrorist activities in the province.
