Iraqis Arrest Terrorism Suspects

Sept. 14, 2009 - Iraqi security forces, assisted by U.S. advisors, arrested suspected terrorists in the Baghdad and Tikrit areas of Iraq in recent days, military officials reported. During operations Sept. 11, Iraqi forces in Baghdad arrested 10 suspected terrorists. Four of the suspects, arrested in the Rasheed area, were charged with participating in explosives attacks. Six of the suspects were arrested in the Lutifiyah and Mahmudiyah areas of Babil province, and are suspected of working with terrorist networks. One is believed to be a local cell leader. They also are suspected of forcibly displacing Shiia families, setting up illegal checkpoints and kidnappings.

In northern Iraq, Iraqi forces arrested two suspected terrorists on warrants, and a third suspect was charged in Ninevah province with conducting multiple attacks against Iraqi forces and local residents in Sinjar.

In Diyala province, Iraqi troops arrested a suspected terrorist with a warrant, and two other people were brought in for questioning because of their association with the suspect, who is believed to be a key leader of a terrorist cell in Baqubah.

In the Tikrit area Sept. 10, Iraqi soldiers arrested two suspected terrorists on warrants, charging them with bomb-related activities in the province. In Ninevah province, Iraqi soldiers arrested two suspected terrorists on suspicion of counterfeiting and laundering money.

On Sept. 9, Iraqi forces arrested four suspected terrorists on warrants. Two are suspected of operating and leading terrorist cells and conducting attacks. In Wasit province, Iraqi soldiers arrested two men suspected of being affiliated with a terrorist network and alleged attacks on Iraqi and U.S. forces in the Wahida and Madain areas.

All of the arrests were made with court warrants and without incident, officials said.
