American Forces Press Service

March 11, 2010 - Afghan and international forces detained numerous suspected insurgents, including two Taliban operatives, and seized enemy weapons in operations over the last two days, military officials reported.

-- A combined Afghan-international security force stopped a vehicle in Farah province's Bakva district yesterday after intelligence information indicated militant activity and detained two suspected insurgents.

-- In Kandahar's Zharay district last night, a combined force captured a Taliban commander responsible for killing people he believed to be spies, controlling roadside-bomb defenses and leading attacks against coalition forces. Another insurgent also was detained for questioning.

-- In Nimroz yesterday, a combined force in the Khash Rud district detained three individuals, one of whom identified himself as the Taliban subcommander who was the target of the operation.

-- A local resident informed International Security Assistance force troops of an explosives cache in the Shindand district of Herat province yesterday. The cache contained 9 pounds of TNT, gunpowder and a fuse.

-- In the Khugyani district of Nangarhar province yesterday, an Afghan civilian reported a roadside bomb's location to Afghan National Police, who found two bombs that an ordnance disposal team then destroyed.

-- Afghan forces operating independently of ISAF found a large weapons cache in Kabul yesterday. The discovery included more than 1,000 detonators with remote control units, and about 1,500 pounds of explosives, sufficient to make 28 individual roadside bombs. Two suspects were arrested in conjunction with the find.

"Afghan national security forces acted on credible intelligence information to plan, coordinate and carry out this operation," said Navy Capt. Jane Campbell, ISAF Joint Command spokeswoman. "This is a significant amount of explosives and related equipment that won't be used to kill or injure anyone."
