Combined Force Detains Multiple Insurgent Suspects

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20, 2011 – A combined Afghan and coalition security force today detained multiple suspected insurgents during a search for a Taliban leader in the Wali Muhammad Shahid Khugyani district of Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, military officials reported.

The leader coordinates and plans insurgent attacks in Ghazni province.

Also today, a combined patrol confiscated a cache of explosives in Zabul province. The patrol was conducting a clearing operation in the village of Arel when it came upon the cache located near an improvised explosive device. The cache contained two containers with 88 pounds of explosive material, 26 pounds of ammonium nitrate -- which can be used to construct bombs -- and other bomb-making materials.

In Afghanistan operations yesterday:

-- A combined force detained two suspects and discovered a cache of explosives during an operation in the Ghazni district of Ghazni province. The cache contained 880 pounds of explosives that were destroyed on site.

-- In the Charkh district of Logar province, a combined force detained one suspected insurgent during a search for a Taliban leader. The leader conducts attacks against coalition forces.

-- Afghan and coalition forces killed four insurgents and detained five suspects during separate operations in eastern Afghanistan. Three insurgents were killed during an airstrike in the Bar Kunar district of Kunar province. Another insurgent was killed after engaging Afghan soldiers with small-arms fire in the Shomali Nakam district of Paktika province. Two individuals suspected of making IEDs were detained in the Bagram district of Parwan province. In the Zumar district of Paktiya province, one individual was detained for possessing weapons. In the Andar district of Ghazni province, Afghan soldiers detained two individuals in separate incidents; one for acting suspiciously and the second for possessing IED-making materials. In Khowst province, a weapons cache was discovered that contained four grenades, 12 mortar fuses, 10 rocket fuses, five anti-personal mines, one anti-tank mine, 200 rounds of ammunition, three assault rifles, and two other rifles.
