Combined Operations Target Insurgents, Weapons, Drugs

WASHINGTON, Oct. 18, 2011 – Afghan and coalition forces worked together in various recent operations to kill and capture insurgents, uncover their weapons stockpiles and seize drugs that generate funds for enemy fighters, military officials reported.

In operations yesterday:

-- A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during an operation Paktika province’s Gomal district in search of a facilitator who plans and conducts attacks against coalition forces in the Sarobi and Orgun districts.

-- In Kunduz province’s Kunduz district, a combined force detained a suspect during an operation in search of an insurgent leader who plans suicide-bomb attacks in Kunduz and Badakhshan provinces.

-- A combined force captured a Taliban leader during an operation in Kandahar province’s Kandahar district. The leader received shipments of explosives and weapons used to support Taliban operations in the area, officials said.

-- In Helmand province’s Reg-e Khan Neshin district, a coalition patrol seized 315 pounds of hashish and detained a suspected insurgent.

In Oct. 16 operations:

-- A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents in Herat province’s Nizam-E Shahid district during an operation targeting an insurgent leader responsible for kidnappings and for planning and coordinating attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. The security force killed the insurgents after being fired upon with rocket-propelled grenades, heavy machine guns and small arms. Afghan security forces detained a suspected insurgent after the engagement.

-- In Zabul province’s Khak-E Afghan district, a combined force killed several insurgents who fired upon them during an operation targeting a Taliban leader. The security force seized small arms, ammunition and communication devices and detained several suspected insurgents.

-- A combined patrol in Kandahar province’s Zharay district seized 176 pounds of hashish and detained three suspected insurgents.

-- In Kandahar province’s Kandahar district, Kandahar province, a combined patrol found and destroyed 12 80 mm rounds.

-- A combined patrol in Khost province’s Musa Khel district found and destroyed five homemade bombs, four bomb primers, three hand grenades, a grenade fuse, various ammunition and two Afghan army uniforms. Two suspected insurgents were detained.

-- In Ghazni province’s Ghazni district, a combined force detained several suspected insurgents during a search for an insurgent leader who is responsible for the deaths of four Afghan police officers and numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
