Iraqis Arrest 6 With Alleged Terrorist Ties

Aug. 16, 2010 - Iraqi security forces arrested six people who allegedly have ties to the al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist organization, military officials reported.

In western Baghdad today, Iraqi forces and U.S. advisors searching for a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq member who allegedly belongs to a terrorist cell that specializes in vehicle-borne bombs arrested a suspected criminal associate of the wanted man.

Near Tarmiyah yesterday, Iraqi forces arrested a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq leader and an alleged criminal associate. The suspected a-Qaida in Iraq leader allegedly has direct ties with other leaders in the organization and is believed to be linked to attacks in the area.

In Muqdadiyah on Aug. 14, Iraqi forces killed a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq associate and arrested another while searching for a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq member who allegedly is responsible for building and planting bombs that attach to vehicles magnetically. While approaching the targeted building, members of the combined security force composed of Iraqi forces and U.S. advisors saw a man carrying an assault rifle in a palm grove. As Iraqi forces surrounded the grove, the man was shot and killed when he engaged the security force.

Near Habaniyah on Aug. 13, Iraqi forces working with U.S. advisors arrested two suspected al-Qaida in Iraq criminal associates while searching for a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq leader who allegedly directs attacks on Iraqi and coalition forces and supports extortion related to construction contracts.
