Combined Force Kills Insurgent, Captures Another

WASHINGTON, April 3, 2012 – An Afghan and coalition security force killed an insurgent and detained another during an operation to capture an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan bomb-making expert in the Kunduz district of Kunduz province today, military officials reported.

The sought-after insurgent is believed to be the senior bomb maker for the IMU in Afghanistan, and he supervises the construction of explosive devices for attacks against senior Afghan officials, officials said.

In other Afghanistan operations today:

-- A combined force captured a Taliban facilitator and seized about 5 kilograms of illegal narcotics in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. The facilitator supplied insurgents with weapons, ammunition and equipment for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

-- An Afghan-led force supported by coalition troops detained several suspects and seized multiple weapons while searching for a Haqqani network facilitator in the Terayzai district of Khost province. The facilitator provides weapons and ammunition to insurgents for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

-- In the Jaghatu district of Wardak province, a combined force captured a Taliban leader who planned and supervised attacks against senior Afghan officials in Kabul.

In operations yesterday:

-- In the Kandahar district of Kandahar province, an Afghan-led, coalition-supported force captured a Taliban facilitator who supplied insurgents with weapons, ammunition and equipment. The security force also detained two other suspects.

-- A combined force captured a Taliban leader in the Archi district of Kunduz province. The leader supervised the construction of roadside bombs and directed attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

-- Coalition forces killed two insurgents, wounded two others and detained three suspects in the Giro district of Ghazni province.

-- Coalition forces and Afghan soldiers detained 10 suspects following an roadside-bomb strike in the Alingar district of Laghman province, and combined forces detained a suspect in the Gardez district of Paktia province.

-- Afghan soldiers and police found and destroyed weapons, ammunition and homemade bombs during operations across southern Kandahar province, with emphasis near the village of Kenjakak. Afghan security forces planned, coordinated and executed the operations independent of ISAF, with ISAF members of Task Force Arctic Wolves serving as advisors.
