Jan. 22, 2010 - Vice President Joe Biden is in Iraq to meet with key leaders and visit U.S. troops, White House officials announced today. Biden is scheduled to meet with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Speaker of the Council of Representatives Ayad al-Samarrai and other political leaders, according to a White House statement.
The vice president also will receive updates from U.S. military and civilian leaders and visit U.S. troops, the statement said.
Biden's visit also is scheduled to include a meeting with Ad Melkert, the United Nations secretary general's special representative for Iraq, to discuss U.S. and international efforts to support Iraq, with a focus on the national elections scheduled for March.
