American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, June 10, 2014 – Five American troops were killed
yesterday during a security operation in southern Afghanistan, Pentagon Press
Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said today.
In a statement, Kirby said investigators are looking into
the likelihood that friendly fire was the cause.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these
fallen," he added.
The incident occurred during a security operation when the
U.S. service members’ unit came into contact with enemy forces, International
Security Assistance Force officials said in a statement issued from the
command’s headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan.
“Tragically, there is the possibility that fratricide may
have been involved,” the statement said. “The incident is under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the families of those killed during this difficult time.”
