Jan. 8, 2009 - Iraqi security forces and U.S. soldiers prevented terrorist attacks and seized weapons Jan. 6 in operations in Iraq, military officials reported. Iraqi national police and U.S. soldiers spotted a magnetic "sticky" bomb attached to the undercarriage of a vehicle in the Hadar community of southern Baghdad's Rashid district. The bomb exploded shortly after police evacuated an Iraqi family to a safe distance.
No one was injured in the blast, but the vehicle was destroyed.
A tip from an Iraqi civilian led Iraqi soldiers to a pipe bomb planted inside a house in southern Baghdad's Saydiyah community. The soldiers transported the bomb to their headquarters, where an Iraqi explosives ordnance disposal team disabled the device.
Elsewhere, Iraqi and coalition forces seized a weapons cache Jan. 6 west of Beijat in Diyala province that included 65 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, eight shotgun shells, five packages of explosives, three crush wires with battery packs and an automatic weapon.
