Iraqi Forces Arrest 24 Terrorist Suspects

May 3, 2010 - Iraqi security forces with U.S. advisors today arrested the suspected leader of the Ansar al-Islam terrorist group, bringing to two dozen the number of terrorist suspects apprehended in Iraq in recent days, military officials said.

Iraqi forces arrested the man and seven of his associates after searching several buildings with U.S. forces advisors in Baghdad's Mansour and Adhamiyah areas. The wanted man is believed to have links to senior al-Qaida leadership.

In other news from Iraq:

-- Iraqi forces arrested a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq associate during a series of combined operations in western Baghdad today.

-- Iraqi forces arrested a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq member and four associates in Kirkuk yesterday. The wanted man is a suspect in terrorist attacks.

-- Iraqi forces working with U.S. advisors searched in Mosul for a wanted al-Qaida in Iraq member believed to have been involved in terrorist attacks. Three suspected terrorists were arrested.

-- Iraqi forces arrested four suspected al-Qaida in Iraq associates during a combined operation east of Tikrit on April 30. The combined force was searching for a suspect in several bombing attacks in the Sulayman Bak area. Information and evidence gathered at the scene led Iraqi forces to identify and arrest the four suspected associates.

-- Also on April 30, Iraqi forces working with U.S. advisors searching for a suspected senior al-Qaida in Iraq leader in Mahmudiyah arrested five suspected criminal associates of the wanted man.
